We are in the midst of replacing all halogen and incandescent bulbs in the pizzerias with LEDs. The Civic is complete, moving on to Pearl next week, then the other three in short order.

It isnt the sexiest, most PR-juicy enviro news break but it reaps BIG results on the sustaino/environ meter, plus it’s just the right thing to do. Check it out: we will save 4,092 kw / year at CIVIC alone! That translates to $321 / year savings and, most amazing, preventing 2 tons of co2 from releasing into the atmosphere. Whoa, dude!

The Wepplers have been growing exceptional salad greens for over 30 years and shipping to top chefs far and wide. And near. We use their greens in HOTLIPS salads  – top flight organic delicacies starting at $3.

Here’s a picture of my dark northern spring wheat that was planted the last week of March, located just northwest of Colton, WA. The flag leaf has emerged and it is just about ready for the head to appear. Harvest projected for late August, then stored until delivery to the mill in Spokane.

Hope to get to meet you late next week on the Shepherd’s Grain tour to your pizza place.

Spring seeding is complete on the farm & crops are emerging and growing.  Now that the seeding is complete, we remove the fertilizer & seeding boots from our direct-seed drill to clean it up.  We like to wash everything down with hot water to remove any fertilizer residue that, if left in place, will cause rust & decrease the working life of our equipment.  Attached is a picture of my John Deere direct-seed drill, in my shop for the cleanup process.  After cleanup, all the parts will be inspected & repaired as needed.  Then we will reassemble so the drill is ready for fall seeding that will commence in late September.

Hoping that it works out that I am able to make it to Portland for Shepherd’s Grain annual meeting in mid-June.  Looks like your establishment is on our tour schedule.  Looking forward to it.

Here is a picture of my hard red winter wheat crop as it emerged from the ground in November, 2012.  It was direct-seeded into the residue from the previous lentil crop the last week of September.  The ground was dry when we seeded & we did not get any significant rainfall until mid-October, when it finally germinated.

I will be planting some dark northern spring wheat when the weather permits this spring, hopefully late March, early April time frame.
